Snapchat, a messaging service popular among young people, has publicly announced that Memories will soon become a paid feature.

Users have been able to save memories on Snapchat since 2016. According to public sources, over a trillion memories have already been saved on Snapchat since the feature became available.

Memories exceeding 5 gigabytes will require a fee. The majority of Snapchat users have less than 5 gigabytes of memories, so this change will not affect them. If a user has more than 5 gigabytes of Memories, they will need to subscribe to Snapchat Plus or Platinum. Memories can also be saved directly to the user’s device.

Snapchat says it will offer 12 months of temporary storage for users who exceed the 5 gigabyte limit. On social media, the issue has sparked outrage and negativity. The company is also being accused of greed. Social media expert Drew Benvie, interviewed by the BBC, believes that eventually all social media platforms will start charging for storage.
