The Näppilä Bridge, which spans the river between Vesilahti and Lempäälä, has changed since the turn of the century; and today’s young people are probably not even aware of Vesilahti’s old Näppilä Bridge—just as I myself didn’t know about it before 2025—but adults and older people are very familiar with the old Näppilä Bridge.

Before the new Näppilä Bridge, which was rebuilt in 1995, the Näppilä Bridge followed a different route than it does today.

A screenshot taken from the Vanhatkartat.fi website shows where the old Näppilä Bridge road used to run. (The upper road is the old one, and the lower one is the new one.) Screenshot: Vanhatkartat.fi.

In August, Someuutiset discontinued 40 percent of its specific news sections, including “Kerta Historia”—but now, with this article, Someuutiset returns “one more time” to local history, right to the heart of Vesilahti.

An interesting fact is that the 1939 Näppilä Bridge had already been renovated once before the 1995 renovation, but the article focuses on the “old-old” Näppilä Bridge.

The Näppilä Bridge was completed in 1893 and, according to Someuutiset, has been renovated three times. The first renovation took place after the Winter War and the Continuation War, in 1950 or 1960, when the road was widened and the wooden railings were replaced with metal ones, as car use was becoming increasingly common at that time.
